There’s a lot going on these few weeks, try to come out when you can. Here’s a sampling (there’s more! be sure to check Shabbos House and UA Hillel FB pages, and the online calendars) of some of the special events, aside for Hillel’s Tuesday Schmoozeday, Shabbos House’s Torah-Tuesday and Minyan Brunches and Shabbos Dinners and Lunches etc etc as usual.
Monday 10/27: LOVE THE SKIN YOU ARE IN
Hillel brings Israeli Plus-size Model Ray Segev to talk about Body Image and being comfortable in your own skin. It will be 8:30pm in the UAlbany Campus Center, 2nd Floor. This is an important message to hear regardless of your personal body size or shape.
Tuesday 10/28: CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM at Torah Tues
Greg Pollack (Class of ’10 and weekend meteorologist at Channel 10) will be back to share his enthusiasm for Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm show with Jewish messages gleaned by Rabbi Mendel from the show’s unexpected twists and turns. Selected clips will be shown, accompanied by relevant messages. 5:45 and 7:45pm with dairy dinner.
Thurs 10/30: CHALLAWEEN for FYSH
First Year Student at Hillel are showing October-style scary movies in the Business Building on Thursday Night. Austin, the new FYSH rep is arranging.
Thurs 10/30: ALUMNI SHEVA BRACHOS
6:30pm at Shabbos House. We invited a few local young couples, as well as some students for a post-wedding get-together dinner for Miriam (Meghan) who went UAlbany for two years before transferring to Queens College, and her newlywed husband Avraham. We attended their wedding in Brooklyn on Sunday, with many Chabad Shluchim from NY and NJ and even PA who have been close with this couple.
Friday 10/31: MR. MONOPOLY COMES FOR SHABBOS
Obviously many have plans for this Friday Night or weekend in general, but there’s still time to enjoy a nice Shabbat dinner at Shabbos House. Prayers 7pm, dinner at 8pm. What does Monopoly have do with this Shabbat? Come and find out.
Shabbat 11/1: SAM’S BAR-MITZVAH ANNIVERSARY
We love to celebrate Bar-Mitzvah anniversaries, especially for Sam who is an Iron-Minyan-Man! The Torah Reading is Lech-Lecha, we’ll do a Kiddush-Club with toasts for Sam on his special anniversary. And Shabbos Lunch, of course, follows as usual.
Sunday 11/2: HILLEL GOES TO LIBERTY RIDGE
Liberty Ridge Farm is a distance away, in a beautiful rural setting with one of the largest, most complicated corn-mazes in the region, animated mannequins playing banjo jazz music on a farm house porch, little rabbits in houses, pumpkin picking and more. Hillel arranges a bonfire, with informal music, good times etc. Nice fall outing. $10pp for the bus, plus bring small money for anything you might want to buy there. Thanks to Hillel for moving the departure time to 1pm, so we can still keep up the weekly Minyan Brunch at 11am and even do a little Talmud, too.
Monday 11/3: SHOOTING (PHOTOS) UNDER FIRE
Gil Cohen-Magen is a photojournalist working for the Agence France-Presse and Ha’aretz News. Magen will discuss the economic and cultural challenges he faced while working for Reuters, the multinational news agency. This event is co-sponsored by CAMERA on Campus and University at Albany Hillel.

11/14-15: ALTERNATIVE PARENTS WEEKEND
Some families couldn’t make it up for Homecoming, so they asked Shabbos House to announce an alternate weekend for families to come up. We already have some significant interest! See this Alternative Parents Weekend Fall 2014 page for more info…
11/15: HAPPY-TO-GO SAT NIGHT EVENT
This year’s JSAM (Jewish Social Action Month) theme is “HAPPY TO GO!” Little gestures that add a little happiness to other people’s lives. We’ll have an event on Saturday Night (early enough after Shabbat so people can go out afterward) with entertainment and and a fun atmosphere (starting with a lively musical Havdalah) where each student will pack and prepare a few happy-to-go packages to share with random folks on campus. Each person gets two, one to enjoy and one to pass along. More info soon…
