The Shabbos House Kitchen is more than a place to make good food. Like all kitchens with character and soul, its a place to cook up lots of wonderful memories and help relationships simmer and develop lots of lasting flavor.

CHALLAH BAKING & CHALLAH WITH LOVE

Knead some dough? It’s a great stress-reliever, and a hands-on way to prepare for Shabbat. Learn new twists and braids, enjoy the texture of the dough, and savor the flavor of homemade bread baking, while you hang out with friends.

Another twist on Challah Baking is “Challah with Love”. We occasionally bring Challah to local seniors who’d appreciate it most. Sometimes we do soups as well.

SHABBOS PREP, COOKING & SETUP

It take a lot to make Shabbos meals for so many students and Raizy can’t do it alone. Thankfully teams of students come out on Thursday evening, and some come by on Friday afternoons to help prepare the food. It’s a great opportunity for informal conversation. We also set-up the tables on Thursday nights, so there’s something to do for everyone.

Occasionally we do special “Culinary Nights” on Thursdays (usually on weeks of Hillel Friday Night weekends) to try to learn to make a new dish or dessert, and go through it step by step.

CHOLENT COOK-OFFS, DESSERT BAKE-OFFS etc.

We do this at least once a year. Students or student-teams submit recipes one week prior, approved for Kosher, ingredients purchased by Shabbos House, all food is prepared at Shabbos House on Thursday night (for desserts) or Friday afternoon (for Cholent). The tasting and student-voting is at Shabbos Lunch. It’s exciting, different, and some recipes (usually the easier ones) make it into the regular Shabbos House rotation.
