A. I’m not much of a maven on either bitcoin or the Jewish law on this matter, but this much I know. Bitcoin straddles the divide between being a currency of sorts and being a traded commodity. This is a tricky subject as commodities and currencies do share certain things in common, yet there are significant differences in how the two are handled in contemporary law and economics, as well as in Talmudic law. These are old questions! In fact there’s a sizeable section of the Talmud, titled “HaZahav” which is the 4th chapter of tractate Bava Metziah which deals with these types of issues.
