We’ve added some events and there are some updates to Labor Day Weekend 2019 at Jewish UAlbany (included a Shabbat theme, an added Movie Night, and a downtown tour) so please check out the info below:

FRIDAY AUG 30 – SHABBAT DINNER AT HILLEL
This week Shabbat dinner (prepared at UAlbany Kosher Dining) is sponsored by Hillel (with an “Under the Sea” theme) and will be 8pm in Campus Center Room 375 (3rd floor corner room). Prayers will be 7pm in various Campus Center Rooms. Please note that (different for this year) Orthodox Services will be held in the Assembly Hall on the 2nd floor at 7pm.

SAT AUG 31 – SHABBAT DAY MINYAN &/OR LUNCH
As always, Minyans are called for 10am at Shabbos House on Sat mornings, but we really do need Minyan by 11am for Torah Reading. This week we read Torah portion of “Re’eh” lots of nice goodies in there. Shabbat Lunch follows usually starting at 12:30pm, but come when you can. No need to come to services to enjoy Shabbat Lunch as a campus community.

SAT NIGHT AUG 31 – SAT NIGHT MOVIE NIGHT
This is an unadvertised special! We’re showing “Keep Quiet” a powerful true story of a vocal anti-Semite in Hungary whose own Jewish identity is exposed and it turns his life upside down (it happened fairly recently). It’s quite thought-provoking about topics like repentance and forgiveness. 9pm at Shabbos House along with homestyle pizza and nibbles.

SUNDAY SEP 1 – MINYAN BRUNCH
First of many weekly Minyan Brunches this Semester! Shacharit Minyan is called for 11:00am, (its Rosh Chodesh this time, so we read Torah on a Sunday and sing some extras) bring your own Tefillin or we can share, followed by bagels, lox, shmears and all the trimmings. We also do a short Talmud study over the brunch.

There will be a Shabbos House Lchaim Board Bonding Outing Sunday afternoon into Monday morning.

MONDAY SEP 2 – AND A LABOR DAY DOWNTOWN OUTING:
No classes on Labor Day Monday. The NYS Capitol Building and State Museum are closed, but Mendel will lead a driving/walking tour of murals and landmarks downtown for those interested. Please do let us know if interested so we can figure out carpool rides.

TORAH-TUES: TALMUD TESHUVAH STORIES
Being that we’re ushering in the month before Rosh Hashanah, we’ll do a set of four interesting Talmud stories about repentance, first studied and discussed in smaller study groups then each group shares their insights and takeaways with the rest of the class. Classes and dinner at both 5:45 and 7:45pm.

HIGH HOLIDAYS AHEAD…
Not too early to start talking about the High Holidays! Yes, we do have prayers and festive meals for all the holidays, and some students will go home to be with family. Please check out this Holiday Signup Form with details of all the Fall Jewish holidays from Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur all the way to Sukkot and Simchat Torah! Yes, it’s a long form, but we wanted to keep it all on one form, compact and comprehensive. Students are always welcome, no need to RSVP, but this form is especially helpful to us to plan for Rosh Hashanah (when more students tend to go home) and the first days of Sukkot (this year Fall Break at UAlbany). There’s also a checkbox if you need an excuse letter for class (indicate in the comments the details if you plan to go home, or need permission for services, or no exam-taking etc). This form can be filled in later or resubmitted as your plans firm up or change. THANK YOU!
