One of the reasons I enjoy watching football is because of how engaged all the players are in each play. I feel football has the most player engagement of all the four major American sports. True, players play different positions and have different specialties, talents and roles, but when the football is in play, they are all engaged. I feel this way about our campus community, we have different groups of students who each play their role, some more so, some less so, some more in certain areas than others, but everyone’s activity and actions is crucial. And we do have great head-coaches (Mendel and Raizy) leading the way and guiding us through it, game after game. One of the big talks about this Superbowl is the big upset for the Bengals to make the Superbowl, unexpected, no one saw that coming. And same it is with us here in our campus community, especially with Covid. I would have never expected to have as much Jewish life here as we did in Covid last year and to be the point we are now, feels like an amazing upset. May we all continue to each play our roles, appreciate our special team/community and continue to beat expectations.

One thing about sports is the importance to keep going forward. Every game has setbacks or failures, its important they don’t drag us down, dampen our energy. Don’t dwell on the past. Right now there’s a game to play, moves to make, and we got to keep going forward.

Football has plays, but a play is only an idea, a plan on paper until it is actually executed by the players. Same can be said about being Jewish. Yes, we are Jewish – its a name we carry. But the question is are we carrying through the plan? Are we executing the play? Are we living up to the name we carry?
