Some years ago we shared and posted a glimpse into the Chassidic teaching of “A Shofar-Less Rosh Hashanah when it falls on Shabbos”. This year, 5787/2026, friends and colleagues have been sharing a talk from the Rebbe at the end of 5749, just before Rosh Hashanah 5750/1989 (when Rosh Hashanah fells on Shabbos). That 1989 talk goes through a lot of the same Chassidic teaching on how Shabbos fills in for Shofar, and how both Shabbos and Shofar share certain inner dimension spiritual functions. So the start of the concept is pretty much the same.
But then the Rebbe asks a question: Even if Shabbos fills in for Shofar, it’s not the same. Because Shofar is a human effort and avodah, it is a deep calling from below. Whereas Shabbos is set and designated from heaven. How does Shabbos fill in for that human yearning of Shofar?
This talk of the Rebbe explains Shabbos and Shofar as both expressing our Bittul, our selfless, self-transcendent rising to connect with G-dliness. Shofar is an active, loud, bold expression of that Bittul. It cries out from the essence, it transcends words and transcends self.
