Sukkot is a super special time of the year at Shabbos House with festive meals, atmosphere, warmth and friendship. There’s something about the Sukkah that generates inner atmosphere. It’s also the time of year when the new freshman class starts to “gel” and come together. And we have annual traditions like the “Sukkahleh Song”, hot apple cider on Friday Night and other specialties. This year’s theme is “Around the World in the Sukkah” and each meal we’ll be visiting a different country with themed foods, trivia, history and messages: Italy, Israel, China and Syria.

WEDNESDAY 9/18 – First Night in the Sukkah

First Night in the Sukkah! Prayers 7pm, Dinner at 8pm. Tonight we visit Italy with garlic bread, minestone soup, meatballs and spaghetti, biscotti and more!

THURSDAY 9/19 – First Day of the Holiday, and Second Night in the Sukkah

Morning Holiday Prayers 9:30am, including Hallel Singing, Torah Reading and Great Lulav Shakes…

Lunch follows, at approx 12-12:30pm in the Sukkah. Lunch takes us to Israel with Pita, Felafel, Tzips, Chumus, Babagasnoush, Israeli Salad and Rugelach…

Evening Prayers 7pm Mincha, a little break and then 7:50pm Maariv. We’ll eat dinner about 8:15pm in the Sukkah. Dinner takes us to China, with eggrolls, lo-mein, Tso’s Chicken, almond cookies and more.

FRIDAY 9/20 – 2nd Day of the Holiday, and later Shabbat in the Sukkah

Morning Holiday Prayers 9:30am, including Hallel Singing, Torah Reading and Great Lulav Shakes…

Lunch at 12 or 12:30 in the Sukkah takes us to Syria, with Laham Bajine, Date Cookies and a bunch of Syrian Salads.

Friday Night in the Sukkah is one very special memorable time! It’s the fullest night of the holiday. Prayers 7pm, Dinner 8pm. No trip around the world necessary, Friday Night in the Sukkah is Friday Night in the Sukkah.

SAT / SHABBAT 9/21: The Shabbat of Sukkot

10am Morning Prayers, no Lulav this time, but we do sing Hallel and have Torah Reading.

Lunch is at 12:30pm in the Sukkah with hot cholent, the works. BTW, this day is Clash of the Quads on Campus, we’ll be doing “Unity of the Quads” (the four species of the Lulav and Etrog set, though we don’t shake them on Shabbat).

SUNDAY 9/22 – New Sukkah on the Block at the BLOCK PARTY

Student Association hosts a block party on Dutch Quad Commons from 2-6pm. Stop by the L’chaim Table to pick up your mini-flashlight with the message “A little light dispels much darkness” as well as Lulav Shakes in our Purple and Gold mini-Sukkah. Plus the purple panels on the Sukkah are chalkboard, so write your message!

TUESDAY 9/24 – Late Night Torah-Study 

No Torah-Tuesday this week (resumes after the holidays). Instead, we’re doing a 10pm-Midnight informal Torah study sessions in the Sukkah, with teas and pastries and maybe a soup. It’s customary to stay up late and study on this night, called Hoshana Rabba.
