PurimPlay2016LogoThe joyous Jewish holiday of Purim falls this year on Wednesday night, March 23rd (through Thursday March 24th) 2016, just days after the return from UAlbany’s Spring Break.

PRE-PURIM

Try to think of a costume. No need to spend a lot, clever creativity can go a long way. And of course, you are very welcome even if not in costume.

Pre-Purim Hamantasch Baking, Monday Night March 21st. No Torah-Tuesday, but we’ll be doing some setup and prep for Purim (the next night) if you want to come by.

PURIM NIGHT, WED MARCH 23RD

This year’s theme is an arcade. Hence the Google Play icon, with the play button becoming a Hamantasch. We’re bringing some vintage arcade machines into Shabbos House, and other games of fun, skill and chance. As every year we begin with Megillah Reading and noisemaking graggering. Megillah at 7:30pm.

Arcade-wise, (we hope to open that approx 8:30pm) so far we have booked a pinball machine, Pacman game, multi-game arcade box, 2-driver tandem car game, and an electronic bowling shuffle-board. We’re hoping to have some video games available, too. And we’ll have some card tables, maybe chess and bananagrams for some quick fun.

The Masquerade is a big deal every year on Purim. It’s nice when students come out in costume, and we do offer token prizes (usually gift cards) for best overall, best couple or group, most original or creative, etc. but coming just as you are is fine, too.

New this year is a pre-recorded Purim Shpiel, a humorous skit that’s a spoof on a popular TV show and reflects Jewish life at UAlbany. It will be shown on screen during the festivities. Thanks Rachel L. for directing!

If you have class or work late, have no fear! Festivities should run late and we will have a second Megillah reading closer to 10pm. Come when you can!

PURIM DAY, THURS MARCH 24TH

Purim Morning Minyan 9:15am at Shabbos House, includes Shacharit, Torah-Reading and Megillah. Plus a bite to eat. Should be over before 11am.

Possible: Lchaim Table Purim Midday 11am-2pm on campus (location TBA) with Purim treats to take and optional Megillah-on-the-go.

We will have a smaller but festive and spirited Purim meal that we’re calling “Purim Pinot” on Thursday evening towards the end of Purim Day. Afternoon Megillah Reading at 5:30pm, Purim Pinot starts at 6:30pm. We’re serving pepper-steak, and Purim spirit! Come with something meaningful, uplifting or inspiring to share…

Hopefully the joyous Purim spirit will linger into Shabbat and beyond!
