Check back here as we finalize and update Chanukah events for this year – 5776/2015 at Shabbos House Chabad serving UAlbany:

NOTES ABOUT MENORAH LIGHTING:

If you need a Menorah and Candles, we have it! Come by anytime or pick it up at the Lchaim Latke Table on Monday….

Students who can’t light in their own rooms are VERY welcome to come to Shabbos House anytime after dark, on each of the nights of Chanukah to light a Menorah at Shabbos House. Many students do this.

Hashtag your Menorah pics #sharethelights – it helps spread the Chanukah miracle, the happiness and bright message of the lights!

SCHEDULE OF CHANUKAH EVENTS AT SHABBOS HOUSE / UALBANY 2015:

SUNDAY 12/6 – FIRST NIGHT OF CHANUKAH

Stop by Shabbos House anytime after dark to light your own Menorah and enjoy some freshly made sizzling homemade Latkes, and some Chanukah spirit. We’re serving soup and other nibbles. Feel free to come here to light Menorah any night of Chanukah after dark…

MONDAY DAYTIME 12/7 – HOT LATKE TABLE AT THE SMALL FOUNTAIN

It’s likely to be cold out, as it will be December in Albany, so hot Latkes are an especially appreciated nibble out on the podium. Lchaim will be tabling with mini Hot Latkes from 11am to 2pm. Plus pick up some choco-gelt, a Dreidel. And if you need a Menorah and candles, we’ll have that, too!

MONDAY EVENING 12/7 – MENORAH LIGHTING ON THE PODIUM

We’re scheduled to light a grand Menorah outside on the Podium near the Small Fountain at 8:30pm on Monday night. One year we did a Toy-Menorah (later donated to children organizations), another year we did a Coin-Menorah in Hurricane Glasses (given to families who lost a lot in Hurricane Sandy), and last year we did the decorated “Major-Menorah” (with professors from those departments lighting the candles).

This year? We’re decking the Menorah out in black and asking students to wrote messages of light and positivity using gold and silver metallic markers. Get your message on it! It will be lit on the second night of Chanukah near the Small Fountain at 8:30pm.

TUESDAY 12/8 – 8-MINUTE FILM SHORT AT TORAH-TUESDAY

For the last Torah-Tuesday of the semester, we’re showing “Naturalized” an 8-minute short by Julia Kots, a very powerful well-done short film that pivots on its final 30-seconds. It has lots of food for thought, and we’ll have dairy food for eating as well.

WEDNESDAY 12/9 – MIDNIGHT BREAKFAST

An annual tradition on the eve of Reading Day. This year it is Chanukah, too. Student are welcome to light Menorahs, enjoy a big buffet of breakfast foods, and usually we show a light film – a way to chill before finals. 10pm-12 midnight at Shabbos House.

THURSDAY 12/10 – SHABBOS PREP & SET-UP

Starting at 7:30pm students come over to help prep for Shabbos Dinner. On Chanukah this is a great time to light Menorah as well!

FRIDAY 12/11 – PRE-SHABBAT DINNER CHANUKAH SPECIAL

Students can come over to light Menorah at 3:50pm (yeh, it’s quite early but has to be before Shabbat begins) and we’re going to have a yartzeit Mincha Minyan at 4:05pm. We’re not going to pray Kabalat Shabbat until 6:15pm and dinner isn’t until 7pm, but we’re planning a “Happy Hour” of sorts, with mocktails and finger foods and a pre-Shabbat Chanukah Party from 4:30-6pm. Stay tuned!

And of course a Shabbat Chanukah Dinner, 7pm at Shabbos House.

SUNDAY 12/13 – MINYAN BRUNCH WITH TORAH READING

Being Sunday, we rarely get Torah reading at our Minyan Brunches, but this week we read Torah for two reasons: it is both Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah!
